Where the numbers come from.

Every figure on this site comes from a public source or from the TriesteVillas CRM, with the date it was extracted. Here are the method, the licences and the open files.

A single starting point

Every time and distance «from Trieste» starts from one point: Piazza Unità d'Italia, 45.650° N · 13.768° E. The destinations are the central squares of each place, fixed in the site's register with their description.

For each source: what it measures, how we use it, the licence and the date of extraction.

  • Driving times and distances

    measured on 5 October 2026

    OSRM, the open-source routing engine, on OpenStreetMap data; car profile, no traffic. These times are usually optimistic compared with real driving; in summer, on the coast, traffic can double them.

  • Cycling stretches

    measured on 5 October 2026

    OSRM with the FOSSGIS server's bike profile. The time you read on the site is calculated at the speed stated next to each stretch.

  • Terrain elevation

    extracted on 5 October 2026

    EU-DEM (Copernicus) via AWS Terrain Tiles. A place's elevation is that of the ground, not of buildings: minimum, median and maximum within 400 m of the square, at a resolution of about 47 m.

  • The 3D relief

    extracted on 5 October 2026

    The relief covers 13.450° E to 14.220° E and 45.380° N to 45.900° N, at zoom level 12: about 47 m per pixel. The tiles combine SRTM, EU-DEM and ETOPO1.

  • Sale prices

    extracted on 5 October 2026

    The Evidenca trga nepremičnin (ETN), the public register of property sales kept by the Surveying and Mapping Authority (GURS). Contracts from 1 January 2023 to 31 August 2026: market sales of whole, finished units. The price per square metre is on the usable floor area in the land registry; for houses it includes land and outbuildings. We publish a median only with at least 15 sales, always with the count, the period and the range between the first and third quartile.

  • Prices and registry values

    extracted on 5 October 2026

    For each sale, the price divided by the GURS generalised value (as of 1 January 2025) of what was sold; we publish the median per municipality. It helps read the registry value as an order of magnitude of the market.
