The gulf by sea: boats, catamarans and the days out you can do without a car

Nobody buys a home in Piran to reach it by boat. But once you are here, the sea becomes a road: to Trieste, to Venice, to Rovinj. Here are the lines month by month, with real timetables and fares from the 2026 season, and the days out that actually work by sea.

In brief

  • Only one line sails all year, Trieste–Muggia; the others are summer lines, from late April to early October.
  • From the Slovenian coast, boats to Trieste and Croatian Istria leave only from Piran, in summer; to Venice only from Piran, on Saturdays.
  • In Trieste the boats leave from two piers: Molo IV for Piran and Istria, Riva Nazario Sauro for Muggia and the rest of the gulf.
  • A Sunday in Venice from Piran cannot be done by sea; a Saturday can.
  • The 2027 timetables are not published yet: here you will find the 2026 season, with dates.

The lines, month by month

Choose a month: the map keeps lit the lines that sail that month, and each opens a card with days, duration, fares and the booking link. «The gulf up close» shows the coast between Trieste and Piran with the border.

In July: 9 lines

Timetables, days and fares of the 2026 season, read on the operators' and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region's websites and timetables. The 2027 timetables are not published yet: the summer lines usually come back, but dates and fares are confirmed in spring. Read on 8 October 2026. Days out by sea: the ones that actually work

Going and coming back the same day depends on the day of the week, because every line has its own calendar. Time ashore is calculated on the 2026 timetables, departure and return included.

  • Doable

A Saturday in Venice, from Piran

    SatPiran 08:00 Venice 11:00Venice 17:00 Piran 20:00

    5 h ashore

At the Venice pier an hour before the return: you have an hour less in town.

  • Not doable

A Sunday in Venice, from Piran

Not by sea: the catamaran sails only on Saturdays, and from Umag on Wednesdays in summer.

  • Doable

A day in Trieste, from Piran

    WedPiran 11:05 Trieste 11:50Trieste 17:30 Piran 18:10

    5 h 40 min ashore

Only on summer Wednesdays. From Koper you can do almost the whole trip by sea, with the Zlatoperka to Piran.

  • Doable

A day in Piran, from Trieste

    ThuTrieste 08:00 Piran 08:40Piran 20:15 Trieste 20:55

    11 h 35 min ashore

Thursday is the longest day; on Saturdays and Sundays you get an hour less.

  • Doable

Rovinj for the day, from Piran

    ThuPiran 08:55 Rovinj 10:05Rovinj 18:50 Piran 20:00

    8 h 45 min ashore

On Thursdays, direct. On Saturdays and Sundays via Poreč.

  • Not doable

An evening in Trieste, from Koper

Not by sea: there is no Koper–Trieste line, and the evening runs from Piran reach Trieste with no return.

  • Doable

Grado for the day, from Trieste

    Tue–SunTrieste 08:15 Grado 09:30Grado 19:45 Trieste 21:00

    10 h 15 min ashore

Tuesday to Sunday; the same boat continues to Lignano.

Leaving from Trieste: two piers, two operators

The catamaran to Piran, Poreč, Rovinj and Mali Lošinj (Liberty Lines) leaves from Molo IV, at the Nuova Stazione Marittima, not from Molo Bersaglieri. The Delfino Verde boats, to Muggia, Barcola, Sistiana, Duino, Monfalcone, Grado and Lignano, leave from Riva Nazario Sauro, at the root of Molo Bersaglieri. They are a few minutes' walk apart, but whoever waits at the wrong pier misses the boat.

With Liberty Lines, anyone buying a ticket on the day must be at the ticket office in good time, and for the routes to Croatia check-in closes before departure. On the Delfino Verde boats seats cannot be booked.

Documents, bikes and pets

At sea between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia there are no border checks: the European Commission records none, and Italy's temporary controls concern the land border with Slovenia, until 18 December 2026. Operators still ask for a valid ID, and for the Venice catamaran its details must be given when booking.

Bikes go on almost every line, for a fee and while places last. Small pets travel in a carrier; for dogs on the Muggia boats a lead and a muzzle are required.

Cruise ships in Koper

For 2026 Luka Koper has 79 cruise ships scheduled, with about 130,000 passengers; the busiest month is August, with 14 ships. The terminal is next to the old town, and anyone looking for a home in the old town would do well to go there on a cruise day. For comparison, Trieste had 455,469 cruise passengers in 2025.

And next year

No operator has published its 2027 timetable yet. The regional lines of Friuli Venezia Giulia have multi-year contracts: Liberty Lines' contract for Piran and Istria also covers summer 2027, Delfino Verde's for the summer lines of the gulf runs to 2030. Liberty Lines opened its 2026 sales in mid-December 2025: for 2027 it is reasonable to expect them around the same time, but that is a forecast, not an announcement.

What we do not know yet

5

Anything we have not yet found in a reliable source is listed here, rather than passed off as certain.

  • The 2027 timetables, dates and fares of all lines.
  • Whether the Zlatoperka will return in 2027 between the towns of the Slovenian coast.
  • Whether Venezia Lines will resume departures from Piran: we found none for 2026.
  • The rules for pets on Delfino Verde's summer lines and on the Zlatoperka.
  • The bike fare on the Venice catamaran: the website and the printed timetable give different figures.

Questions

Is there a ferry from Trieste to Piran?

In summer, yes: the Liberty Lines catamaran leaves from Molo IV in Trieste six days a week (not on Tuesdays) and reaches Piran in under an hour. The rest of the year, no: you go by car or by bus.

Can you do Piran to Venice and back in a day?

Yes, on Saturdays from May to October: a direct catamaran, with the coach transfer from the coast hotels included. Not on Sundays; in summer there is also a Wednesday departure from Umag.

Is there a boat between Koper and Trieste?

No. From the Slovenian coast, boats to Trieste leave only from Piran. In summer the Zlatoperka links Koper, Izola and Piran, and from Piran you take the catamaran to Trieste.

Do you need a passport on the boats between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia?

There are no border checks at sea, but you need a valid ID, and for the Venice catamaran its details must be given when booking.

Can you take a bike on board?

Yes, almost everywhere: for a fee, one per passenger and while places last. On the Venice catamaran a bike is accepted only with a one-way ticket.
