Caves, dolines and a stud farm founded in 1580
Water sinks into the limestone, leaving dolines on the surface and rivers underground. The Škocjan Caves near Divača have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986; according to the park, the Reka river that vanishes there comes back up at the Timavo springs near Duino. Near Lokev, Vilenica has records of paying visitors from 1633, and its operator calls it the first show cave in the world.
Lipica gave the Lipizzaner its name: Archduke Charles II signed the purchase of the estate on 19 May 1580, and the breeding tradition has been UNESCO intangible heritage since 2022. It is a stud farm estate, not a housing market; buyers look in Sežana, Lokev and the villages nearby. Štanjel, in the municipality of Komen and first mentioned in 1402, keeps the Ferrari garden that Max Fabiani laid out between 1920 and 1930.
