Two parks and the salt pans
A large part of the Riviera is protected. The Strunjan Landscape Park, founded in 1990 with borders fixed by a government decree in 2004, takes in the Stjuža lagoon, salt pans still in use and a flysch cliff up to 80 m high, which the Portorož tourist board calls the highest on the Adriatic. The Debeli rtič Landscape Park has covered the tip of the Ankaran peninsula, with a strip of sea, since 2018. South of Lucija, the Sečovlje salt pans have been a Ramsar wetland since 1993, the first in Slovenia, and in their northern part, Lera, salt is still harvested by hand.
Protection has a cost. The Strunjan cliff is geologically active, and the coastal footpath from Piran to Fiesa was closed after a landslide in May 2024 and again in September 2026, when rain had soaked the slopes. What the Strunjan decree allows in extensions, pools or new building we have not yet checked, and the same goes for the zones of the Debeli rtič park: ask before you plan.
